July Message from Mark Yates
As we begin July, I’m thinking about what it means to build in a country approaching its 250th year. For business owners, freedom has always had a practical meaning. It’s the ability to own, hire, compete, secure capital, win contracts, create jobs, and build something that lasts beyond one generation. That is the work of the Black Chamber of Memphis. Since 1974, this organization has helped business owners build, compete, and grow. From the Black Business Association of Memphis to the Black Chamber of Memphis, our name has evolved, but the work has remained steady: advocacy, access, business development, and economic opportunity for Black businesses across Memphis and the Mid-South. That kind of staying power matters. For 52 years, this organization has stood through changing markets, shifting politics, economic uncertainty, and new opportunities. As America reflects on 250 years, BCoM’s history reminds us that progress is not automatic. It requires strong businesses, strong institutions, committed members, and partners willing to invest in the future we say we want. This month, we’re also mindful of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. As someone who has led a behavioral health organization for several years, I know strong businesses require strong people. Leadership carries pressure, and we should be honest about the mental and emotional discipline it takes to build anything meaningful, especially in challenging times. At its best, America’s promise has always been about more than being seen. It’s about having the opportunity to participate fully, contribute meaningfully, and help shape what comes next. For Black business owners, that promise has an economic dimension. We are not standing outside the future of this country. We are helping build it through ownership, enterprise, work, creativity, and community investment. As America looks toward its next 250 years, I invite you to help shape BCoM’s next chapter. Become a member. Refer a business owner. Partner with us. Use the Chamber as a working tool. The future of business growth in Memphis will be built by people and institutions willing to do the work.

On June 11, 2026, the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Memphis Chapter hosted its Economic Empowerment Forum at Epicenter Memphis, bringing together entrepreneurs, business leaders, and community stakeholders for a conversation on wealth creation, business growth, and sustainable entrepreneurship. Presented in partnership with the Black Chamber of Memphis and moderated by Mark Yates, the forum featured a panel of local leaders, including Stuart P. Lott, Marqueta A., Chasity Monroe, and Deidre Ellis, who shared insights on scaling businesses, building strategic partnerships, and creating pathways to long-term ownership. The evening also featured a fireside chat with entrepreneur Cherina Mowbray Rowand, founder of the Rowand Restaurant Group, who discussed her journey of growing successful hospitality brands and emphasized the importance of strong systems, strategic execution, and real estate expansion. Key takeaways included the importance of sustainable business growth, equitable access to capital and opportunities, and leveraging local resources such as Epicenter Memphis and the Crews Center for Entrepreneurship. The event reinforced the power of ownership, innovation, and collaboration in building lasting economic impact throughout Memphis and the Mid-South. |

Family, Friends & Community: BCoM Celebrates Juneteenth at AutoZone ParkOn June 19, the Black Chamber of Memphis welcomed members, partners, supporters, and friends to our Annual Night at AutoZone Park for an evening of connection, celebration, and baseball in honor of Juneteenth. More than 150 guests joined us on the Party Deck as the Memphis Redbirds took on the Nashville Sounds. The evening began with the City of Memphis vs. Shelby County Government Juneteenth Softball Game, creating an atmosphere that celebrated both community pride and Memphis' rich baseball heritage. Beyond the game itself, the evening provided an opportunity for business owners, professionals, community leaders, and families to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Events like Family & Friends Night reflect the Chamber's commitment to creating spaces where business and community naturally intersect. At the Black Chamber of Memphis, we believe economic mobility is built through relationships. Whether through educational programs, networking opportunities, advocacy, or community events like our Night at Autozone Park, we remain committed to connecting entrepreneurs and professionals with the resources and relationships that help businesses grow. |
