WEALTH JOURNEY NEWSLETTER |
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO |
|
Mark Yates President & CEO |
Dear BCOM Members, Partners, and Friends, I want to start by being straight with you. The ground is shifting under all of us right now, and our members tend to feel it first. The cost of doing business, access to capital, available contracts, and even the rules themselves are not sitting still. In a season like this, a Chamber earns its keep by being useful, not loud. That is where our focus remains: helping you reach the information, capital, procurement opportunities, relationships, and networks that allow your business to keep growing, regardless of the headlines. This month, we celebrate Juneteenth, and I do not take it lightly. Freedom was the beginning of the work, not the end of it. Our ancestors understood something we cannot afford to forget: real freedom must include the freedom to own, build, hire, and leave something behind for the next generation. That is the work of this Chamber. Every business we help start, strengthen, or scale is part of that longer story, and I am proud of the company we keep in it. June also gives us a moment to recognize Father’s Day. As a father of two young adult daughters, I know the work of building is never only about us. It is about what we model, what we make possible, and what we leave for those coming behind us. To the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, uncles, and father figures in our network, thank you for the steady work you do in your families, businesses, and communities. This month also allows us to recognize Black Music Month and Men’s Health Month. In Memphis, we know Black music is not only culture; it is enterprise, creativity, and economic legacy. We also know that building businesses, families, and communities requires healthy people. As someone who has worked in behavioral health for many years, I believe we have to talk more openly about mental health, preventive care, and the support men need to lead well, live well, and keep building. We have several real reasons for you to show up this month:
That momentum continues in August with our 2026 Building Wealth in Our Community Symposium, scheduled for August 28, 2026, at Epicenter. This year’s theme, Building Entrepreneur City: Access. Investment. Mobility., names exactly where we are taking this work: from visibility to growth, from opportunity to execution, and from local presence to a real seat in larger markets. Put it on your calendar now. Here is what I am asking of you: come to an event, bring another business owner who needs to be in the room, and use your membership the way it was built to be used, as a working tool and not a card in your wallet. Progress will not come from any one of us alone. It will come from disciplined work, honest relationships, and a shared belief that Black business in Memphis is worth building all the way up. Thank you for standing with us. Sincerely,
|
